SGLI ended 120 days after separation. VA Life caps at $40,000 and makes your family wait two years for the full amount. In 60 seconds, find out where you stand and compare private life insurance options from a licensed independent agent.
Check my coverage optionsYour agent isn't tied to one company. They pull quotes from multiple A-rated insurers across these policy types and show you the VA option next to them, so you pick with the whole picture.
Most veterans don't find out how their coverage changed until a family member goes looking for it. Here is the sequence.
Your service coverage, up to $500,000, stays in force for 120 days after you leave. Nothing changes yet, which is why it's easy to miss.
Unless you converted to VGLI, you have no military-provided life insurance from this day forward. You can still apply for VGLI without health questions for 240 days total.
After this, VGLI is no longer available. VGLI premiums also rise with every five-year age band for as long as you keep it.
Available to veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 0 to 100 percent, ages 80 and under. Capped at $40,000, with a two-year waiting period before the full benefit is paid.
VA Life's maximum is $40,000. If you pass away during the two-year wait, your beneficiary receives the premiums you paid plus interest (4.23% for 2026), not the face amount. A private policy can have a face amount you choose, a fixed premium, and no waiting period on many plans, subject to underwriting and health questions.

Slide to your age and pick a coverage amount. VA Life charges premiums during the waiting period, but pays only premiums plus interest if you die before it ends.
VA Life rates are set by age at application and stay level. Figures above use the VALife monthly premium table published at VA.gov, checked October 16, 2026, and are for comparison only. Private policy rates depend on the insurer, your health and your state, and are not shown here.
You'll talk to one licensed agent who works with veterans every day. They'll show you what the VA provides, what private coverage costs at your age, and tell you plainly if it doesn't make sense for you.
A licensed agent lays VA Life, VGLI and private options side by side, so you see everything, not one choice.
Multiple carriers against the VA option, with the numbers in front of you.
Full coverage can begin on day one of the policy, subject to underwriting.
The quote and the call are free. If private coverage doesn't fit, your agent will say so.

No. The quote and the call are free. If you buy a policy, the insurance company pays the agent a commission; you don't pay extra.
Many plans have no exam, but approval still depends on your answers to health questions and the insurer's underwriting. We'll tell you which plans fit before you apply.
A licensed agent from the Coverage for Service network, from 815-325-9786, during normal hours in your time zone. They'll give you their name and license up front. If you don't pick up, we'll try a couple more times and then stop unless you ask us to call back.
You still have SGLI, so there's less urgency, but some people start private coverage before separation so it's in place on day one out. Different rules apply to active-duty members; the agent will cover them.
