Your coverage timeline

What the VA actually provides, and when it stops.

Most veterans don't find out how their coverage changed until a family member goes looking for it. Here is the sequence.

1
Separation day

SGLI is still active

Your service coverage, up to $500,000, stays in force for 120 days after you leave. Nothing changes yet, which is why it's easy to miss.

2
Day 120

SGLI ends

Unless you converted to VGLI, you have no military-provided life insurance from this day forward. You can still apply for VGLI without health questions for 240 days total.

3
Day 485 (1 year 120 days)

The VGLI window closes

After this, VGLI is no longer available. VGLI premiums also rise with every five-year age band for as long as you keep it.

What's left: VA Life

Available to veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 0 to 100 percent, ages 80 and under. Capped at $40,000, with a two-year waiting period before the full benefit is paid.

The $40,000 ceiling

VA Life's maximum is $40,000. If you pass away during the two-year wait, your beneficiary receives the premiums you paid plus interest (4.23% for 2026), not the face amount. A private policy can have a face amount you choose, a fixed premium, and no waiting period on many plans, subject to underwriting and health questions.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is this a VA program?

No. Coverage for Service (Payload Leads LLC) and the agents it works with are private companies. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs or any government agency.

Why do you text me a code?

So we know the number is yours and that you asked for this. It's one message with a code, nothing else. Marketing texts are separate and only if you opt in.

Does it cost anything?

No. The quote and the call are free. If you buy a policy, the insurance company pays the agent a commission; you don't pay extra.

Is there a medical exam?

Many plans have no exam, but approval still depends on your answers to health questions and the insurer's underwriting. We'll tell you which plans fit before you apply.

Who will call me?

A licensed agent from the Coverage for Service network, from 815-325-9786, during normal hours in your time zone. They'll give you their name and license up front. If you don't pick up, we'll try a couple more times and then stop unless you ask us to call back.

I'm still on active duty. Does this apply to me?

You still have SGLI, so there's less urgency, but some people start private coverage before separation so it's in place on day one out. Different rules apply to active-duty members; the agent will cover them.

What happens to my information?

It's used to prepare your quote and shared only with the licensed agency named in the consent on this form. We don't sell it to anyone else. See the Privacy Policy.
